Peter Liversidge's Proposals for Huntly*

Image credit: Peter Liversidge, Little by Little, 2010. Neon (a series in 15 colours, one available of each colour)

Working on a rare and gorgeous magnesium shell Olivetti lettera 35I manual typewriter, London-based Peter Liversidge methodically unleashes page after page of peculiar and at times absurdist proposal ideas. Some of the ideas are realized, while others remain potentials, but the underlying factor in the books are the nuanced idioms of each researched text.
Collected into simple yet stately book objects, including commissions in the form of Proposals for Liverpool (Tate Gallery, 2008), Proposals for Barcelona (Centre d’art Santa Monica, 2007), Proposals for Brussels (with the British Council for the Europalia Festival, 2007), Proposals for Miami (Art Basel Miami, 2009), the “proposals” are in fact a collection of remembered and imagined turns of phrases, ideas, and quotes from the people of each commissioning place. The proposals are not prescriptive, rather, they serve as a catalyst for what could be.
Commissioned by Deveron Arts to create a Proposal for Huntly, Liversidge will be in town for four weeks researching the locality of this place. Included in the realized list of proposals will be a Huntly sausage created in collaboration with Huntly’s own Charles Raeburn and Liversidge’s grandfather’s sausage recipe. The family recipe originating from Lincolnshire goes back in Liversidge’s family history 108 years and the test batch has already sold out. Another proposal to be realized will be a whisky made approximately 3 months before Liversidge was born (March ‘73), from the now mothballed speyside distillery of Caperdonich.
